Police Log: Father Issued Summons For Leaving Children In Car

Weekly highlights from the Vienna Police Department

After a citizen reported a continuing car alarm  on April 30, Police responded and found two small children -- ages 4 and 5 --  inside the vehicle unattended.

The father returned to the car and told police he was taking the third child to the bathoom in the Vienna Communtiy Center. It is believed that the father left the children in the car about a half hour.

Police issued the father two arrest summonses for violations of the state's child protection laws. The father was released after signing the summonses. Fairfax County Child Protective Services was also advised of the situation.

Highlights between April 29 and May 5

  • A citizen that lives near the intersection of Lewis and West Streets NW complained to Police that drivers are ignoring the stop sign there in the early morning hours. The VPD Traffic Squad is following up on the case.
  • A citizen on Ware Street SW reported that between April 29 and May 2, someone stole his air compressor and paint sprayer from an unlocked hom that was under construction. Police are still investigating the case.
  • Around 10 a.m. April 29, a citizen told police he lost his wallet and its contents in the 7-11 store at 537 Maple Avenue West. 
  • Around 1:42 a.m. April 30, Police found two juvenile males behind the stores on 359 Maple Ave. After an investigation, they were released to their parents. No charges were filed.
  • A citizen on Old Courthouse Road said that between 2 a.m. and noon April 30, someone stole parts of the license plates and expiration stickers from his grandmothers car.The person cut the right corners off of both license plates which contained the stickers.
  • On April 30 at 12:25 p.m., police responded to a report of shouting and gunshots from a home on Orchard Street NW. When they arrived, officers discovered a family argument. The gunshot noise came from a firecracker, which one of the relatives threw out of their window trying to scare another relative. Police helped mediate a resolution and one of the parties left the home. 
  • A father reported that his son's unlocked bicycle was stolen between 1 and 5:47 p.m. on April 30  from the bike rack outside of Noodles and Company at 201 Maple Ave. 
  • A woman reported that she received a large amount of money from the sale of her home. Her boyfriend convinced her not to deposit the check, but to keep it in cash. When the pair were staying at the Wolftrap Hotel on May 3, the boyfriend suggested the girlfriend go out and get food. When she returned, the boyfriend and cash were gone. Police are investigating.
  • A citizen on Holmes Drive reported that sometime between 9:15 p.m. May 3 and 7:45 a.m. May 4, someone slashed all four tires on his car. 
  • A tow truck driver trying to repossess a car around 12:18 a.m. on May 4 on Nutley Street NW told police he saw the owner of the vehicle come out of their house with a shiny object. Police arrived and determined it was a video camera. Officers negotiated a resolution.
  • A resident on Hillcrest Drive reported that someone stole an accordion from inside his home on May 4. Police are investigating the case
  • Police got a  9-1-1 call to Owaissa Road on May 5 from a concerned parent reporting that a domestic dispute was occurring at her ex-husband’s house. Police found that a 15 year old girl asked her father to pick her up at a park and take her to a particular location. The father refused and the girl asked to then go to her mother’s house. The father stated that the girl would have to call her mother when they arrived at the father’s house. This upset the girl and she attempted to jump out of the vehicle. The father restrained the girl and a physical altercation began. At home the girl broke the phone and the father then called her mother to come get her. The mother heard the girl yelling in the background and called police."

Arrests

  • Around 12:26 a.m May 1, police responded to a call of someone sleeping in a vehicle  stopped in the roadway. After attempting to lead the man through sobriety tests, police arrested Phillip Stewart Heffelfinger, 23, of James Drive in Vienna for driving while intoxicated.
  • Police stopped Cam T. Le, 24, of Fairfax on May 1 at the intersection of Maple Ave and Center Street and arrested him for driving while intoxicated. 
  • After responding to assist a a security guard at the Vienna Park Apartments on May 1,  police arrested Jose G. Reyes and  Carlos A. Zelaya Perez, both 35, for Drunk in Public.
  • Police stopped a vehicle around 3:03 a.m. May 2 on Follin Lane. After field sobriety tests and analysis of her breath, Kala P. Smith, 22, of Rock Ridge Road in Vienna was arrested for driving while intoxicated.
