Police Log: Obama Campaign Signs Stolen

A woman requested extra patrols in her neighborhood after noticing several campaign signs have been stolen, according to the Vienna Police Department.

A resident on the 500 block of Tapawingo Road SW said a campaign sign supporting President Barack Obama had been taken from her front yard between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Oct. 16, police said.

She also reported that several signs from the neighborhood are now missing, and requested police deploy extra patrols to the area to deter further larcenies.

Other highlights from the Vienna Police Department Log, Oct. 12 to 18:

• A resident reported her son had not shown up for soccer practice the previous day and she was concerned for his welfare around 9:24 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Vienna Police Department, 215 Center St. South. She telephoned the ex-husband, who currently had custody of the child, but he did not answer his telephone. The Fairfax County Police Department responded to the ex-husband's residence and was not able to locate anyone at the residence. The mother was to contact the Vienna Police Department if the child was not in school the next day. She has made no further contact with the police department.
• A resident reported her wallet had been taken when she stepped away from her desk at her office on the 600 block of Blackstone Terrace NW between 9:30 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. Oct. 15. She had been informed by her credit card company her account had been frozen due to fraudulent charges. This case is being investigated.
• An employee of Cedar Lane School, 101 Cedar Lane SW, reported a student had become unruly and refused to return to her classroom between 7:25 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. Oct. 16. Officer Sheeran spoke with the student and was able to convince her to return to her class.
• A resident reported there was a snake in their gutter on the 300 block of West St. NW around 2:37 p.m. Oct. 16. Officer Sheeran located the snake and identified it as a Ball Python. Sheeran captured the snake and transported it to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter where it will be held until the owner can be located.
• During a traffic stop around 4:59 p.m. Oct. 16 on Fairway Drive at Course Street NE, an officer detected the odor of marijuana in the vehicle. When asked about the odor, the driver admitted there was marijuana in the vehicle. After a vehicle search, Motaz O. Salih, 34, of Locust Street in Herndon was arrested for possession of marijuana. Salih was released after signing the summons.
• A resident reported a friend, who had gone to her house on the 300 block of Locust Street SE, might be in need of medical services around 8:05 p.m. Oct. 16. Officer Evans spoke with the friend who agreed to voluntarily go to an area hospital for medical treatment.
• While on patrol, a sergeant came upon an individual who was staggering through several front yards in the area of Kingsley Road and Desale Street SE around 2:17 a.m. Oct. 17. When approached, the individual stated he was intoxicated and trying to find his way home. Gonzalo S. Lovo, 43, of Patrick Street SE in Vienna was arrested for drunk in public. Lovo was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was to be held until he was sober.
