Police Log: Two Vienna Residents Arrested for DWIs

The following arrest information was supplied by the Vienna Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Two Vienna residents were arrested for driving while intoxicated the morning of Aug. 11, according to the Vienna Police Department.

At 2:09 a.m., Joseph Anthony Barrett, 44, of Council Drive NE was pulled over near Church Street and Glyndon Avenue NE and showed signs of possible impairment. After field sobriety tests, Barrett was transported to the Vienna Police Station, where he refused to take a breath analysis. 

Barrett was then transferred to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with driving while intoxicated and refusal to submit to a breath or blood test, and was held on a $1,500 bond.

At 2:27 a.m., Gavin Randall Scott, 22, of Oak Vale Court was pulled over near Maple Avenue and Westbriar Drive NE arrested for driving while intoxicated and taken to the Vienna Police Department, where a breath analysis was conducted. 

Scott was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was held until he was sober.

Other highlights from the Vienna Police Department Log, Aug. 10 to Aug. 16:

  • A resident reported someone entered her mother's car and stole several checks and vouchers between 5 p.m. July 27 and 9 a.m. Aug. 2.
  • An employee of Vienna Rexall, 150 Maple Ave. SW, reported they had been receiving prescriptions they suspect were forged. The case is being investigated.
  • A resident reported his bicycle had been stolen from the 300 block of Lewis Street NW between noon Aug. 8 and 7:51 p.m. Aug. 15 while the owner was on vacation. He said the bicycle was stored under his carport and unlocked.
  • A resident reported a cat had been living on his front porch. The resident was worried the cat might cause his elderly wife to trip and fall down the porch steps. Animal Control Officer Barker retrieved the cat and transported it to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter.
  • A resident reported he found a bat lying on the carpet in his dining room. He advised the bat had not come in contact with any of the family members or their pets. Officer Shaw captured the bat and released it into a wooded area.
  • A resident reported he received a letter from his auto insurance company thanking him for adding a new driver to his policy. He advised the insurance company he had not added anyone to his policy. He was advised by the company the person could not be removed without the authority of the Department of Motor Vehicles. The case is being investigated.
  • A citizen reported someone stole his mother's lime green bicycle between 9 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Aug. 11. The bicycle was securted to a bicycle rack at 143 Maple Ave. E.
  • A citizen reported the driver of a red vehicle had stopped in the traffic lane at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 11. The citizen reported the drivers behind the red car began to blow their horns. He then approached the driver of the stopped vehicle and told him to move, when the two exchanged words. The driver then told the citizen to get away from his car and drove off.
  • Officer Myers responded to the 600 block of Ware Street SW for the report of an open door. Myers searched the residence and found nothing to be out of order. The house was then secured.
  • A resident reported at 9:18 p.m. Aug. 12 she was stressed about ongoing situations with her two daughters. The resident was advised of support services that may be able to help her with the situations. She advised she would contact the agencies.
  • A resident reported at 5:56 p.m. Aug. 13 a mountain bike had been locked to a town sign at Elmar Driver at Desale Street SE for more than a week. The serial number of the bicycle was checked and the bicycle had not been reported stolen. Officer Shaver transported the bicycle to the Vienna Police Station where it will be held until the owner can be identified.
  • A resident reported his dog had been bitten by his neighbor's dog at 4 p.m. Aug. 14. Animal Control Officer Barker informed the neighbor of the quarantine process. Barker will follow up.
  • A resident reported a neighbor had cut branches from her tree without her or her husband's permission on the 300 block of Tapawingo Road SE between 6:48 p.m. Aug. 14 and 6:48 p.m. Aug. 15. The neighbor advised the branches were hanging into his backyard therefore he thought he had the right to cut them down. The neighbors agreed they would not cut any further branches without prior permission.
  • A resident reported his golf clubs were stolen from his unlocked vehicle that was parked in front of his residence between 7 p.m. Aug. 14 and 7 a.m. Aug. 15. This case is being investigated.
  • A resident reported at 8:18 p.m. Aug. 14 her neighbor had been dumping his wife's cigarette butts in the drain that goes onto her property. The neighbor was advised not to discard the cigarette butts in the drain.
  • Officer Shaver conducted a traffic stop at 1:54 a.m. Aug. 15 and determined the driver had been driving on a revoked driver's license. Shaver arrested Joseph B. Benitez, 28, of Cherry Drive in Fairfax for driving after forfeiture of license. Benitez was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and released on his signature.
  • A citizen reported at 5:12 a.m. Aug. 15 that while walking on the W&OD Trail behind the Community Center, she saw an individual who she thought was following her. Officer Burchfield located an individual who matched the description given by the woman. The individual advised she was on the trail but never approached or followed anyone.
  • A citizen reported someone had entered a customer restroom and strewn several items on the floor — including makeup, change and a home pregnancy test — between 4:30 p.m. Aug. 15 and 6:30 a.m. Aug. 16. They reported nothing was damaged or stolen.
  • An employee at Posh, at 419 Maple Ave. SE, reported a man entered the store and began to follow her around, making her feel uncomfortable, at 11:55 a.m. Aug. 16. She advised the man told her she was beautiful. The man left the store then returned with lunch for her. The employee asked the man to leave the store. She was able to provide the man's license plate information. Officer Shaw located the individual, who was advised to not return to the store.
