Third Victim Found In Crash Of Hot Air Balloon

Investigators seeking video and photos of the accident.

Searchers on Sunday located the third person who was aboard a hot air balloon that crashed into electrical wires and burst into flames in Caroline County.

The accident Friday night killed all three people aboard, including the pilot and two women connected to the University of Richmond women's basketball team.

The third body was discovered Sunday at about 11 a.m. in a heavily wooded area about 100 yards from where the second victim was discovered Saturday, Virginia State Police Spokeswoman Corrine Geller said in a news release.

Ginny Doyle, the associate head coach of the UR women’s basketball team, and Natalie Lewis, the team’s director of basketball operations, were on passenger manifests for balloon flights on Friday, according to The Richmond Times-Dispatch.

A spokeswoman for Lewis' family confirmed this afternoon that she was one of the three people aboard the balloon that crashed. Doyle's sister confirmed to The Washington Post that Doyle also was a passenger.

The balloon had taken off at about 8 p.m. Friday during the Mid-Atlantic Balloon Festival at Meadow Event Park. During its descent in the landing area near Ruther Glen Road, the balloon came in contact with a live utility line, sparking a fire and explosion.

Witnesses then heard an explosion as the fire continued to spread. Local and state law enforcement worked overnight looking for the three occupants and the wreckage of the balloon and basket.

Virginia State Police and National Transportation Safety Board investigators are now concentrating on locating the balloon wreckage and evidence collection, Geller said.

Anyone with photos or video of the balloon crash is asked to submit them by email to the NTSB at eyewitnessreport@ntsb.gov.
