Two Vienna Residents Suffer Life-Threatening Injuries In Loudoun County Crash

Police say distracted driving could be cause of accident that killed an Ashburn man

Two Vienna residents were flown to the hospital in life-threatening conditions on Sunday after a car traveling in the opposite direction on Loudoun County's route 9 hit their vehicle head-on.

Anna M. Castro, 48, and Jose Castro-Rivas, 39,  both of Vienna, were heading west on route 9  in Loudoun County around 6:40 p.m. Sunday night, according to Virginia State Police. Witnesses told Police that a 2010 Toyota Yaris traveling eastbound swerved across the center line and hit the 1997 Toyota Forerunner that Castro was driving.

Witnesses told Police they believed the driver of the Yaris, Satish Mallavaram, 36, of Ashburn, was using a handheld electronic device just before the crash.

Mallavaram died at the scene.

Castro and Rivas were both wearing seatbelts. They were flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital with life-threatening injuries, Police said.
