"We found several citizens in the car performing CPR," Cross said.“We’re very appreciative of the help the citizens gave ... The police offers arrived about the same time, helping in treating the patient."

The victim "was still in cardiac arrest" when the fire department took over and began to perform CPR, he said.

Christensen was breathing again when the fire crew put him in an EMS unit from Arlington with advanced life support, Cross said, but he died later that evening.

The impact a popular coffee shop just west of Beverly Road's intersection with Old Dominion Drive.

“I heard a huge crash ... then everyone went outside and we saw guy had crashed into a telephone pole, ” Greenberry's employee Neva Russo said.

Russo said she and several customers went outside.

“I saw the car very close to the [shrubs on the Greenberry's patio] ... the window was broken ... the red car was across the street totally smashed. The telephone pole was in half lying on the sidewalk,” she said.

The owners of the small red car that was hit in the accident were not in the car at the time of the incident. They were standing in line for coffee at Greenberry's when the accident occurred, Russo said.

“They were calm about it. They waited around to talk to the police. I think they were more concerned about [Christensen],”  Russo said.

Correction: The article has been updated to reflect Christensen's correct age. Fairfax County police incorrectly reported his age.
