UPDATE: Mercedes Stalls in Flash Flood on Lawyers Road

Intersection of Hunter Mill Road, Lawyers Road flooded

UPDATE (5 p.m.): Will Green thought if the cars in front of him could get through the flash flood near the intersection of Hunter Mill Road and Lawyers Road, his all-wheel drive Mercedes certainly could.

"Next thing I knew, water was gushing over the hood and stalled my car," said Green, 38, of Falls Church. "I definitely got scared when it was happening because water immediately started coming through the floorboards. That's how deep it was."

Once Green knew his car was no longer moving, he forced his way out of his car, waded through the water and waited for rescue vehicles to come, which they did thanks to a Good Samaritan who helped him put in the call.

"I had no phone. I had just given an exit interview and turned in my cell phone," Green said. "I was on my way to get an iPhone, so of course this happened."

Green predicted the incident took close to two hours to clean up. Around 4:30 p.m., Green's car was being towed and traffic could move freely through area.

"But cars definitely went by me and through the water even after I stalled. It was probably about 50 cars that passed by me and only three cars stopped, and one was my friend," Green said. "I was surprised so many people passed by without offering help, but everything's fine. I'm OK."

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue officials have not yet responded to a request for comment.

I am amazed at how quickly you Oakton Patch reporters write up relevant area news, instead of just putting out some fluff pieces vaguely related to Oakton. I drove home (including a bit of Hunter Mill Road) during this freakish heavy rain, and when I dried off and turned to my Firefox page, which opens to the Oakton Patch, here was the breaking news on it! I am so glad I didn't settle for the Washington Post as my opening page ... wouldn't get the latest local news from that!!!! ;-)

Agree with Margaret - the Oakton Patch is faster than other Patches in the area on breaking news.

Ironically, I was returning home from buying an iPhone (my first!)!!! I've got the receipts to prove it! I would have delayed my purchase if doing so would have changed karma enough that the Mercedes driver had been able to buy his!
