Woman Charged in 3-Car Crash on Park Street

Driver was distracted, causing chain reaction Saturday near Moore Avenue.

A woman who said she took her eyes off the road to look at her speedometer Saturday looked back up to find her car rear ending another, causing a three-car crash Saturday at Park Street near Moore Avenue SE.

Vienna Police Department spokesman Gary Lose said three vehicles were traveling south on Park Street. Two of them stopped, though, for heavy traffic ahead.

"The driver of the third vehicle stated she took her eyes off the road to look at her speedometer and did not notice the vehicle in front of her had stopped," Lose wrote in an email to Patch.

The woman rear ended the second vehicle in the trio, causing a chain reaction in which that car then rear ended the first.

Resident Fran Griffin, who witnessed the crash, said the woman's car "went through the trunk" of the second vehicle.

The woman charged with failure to pay full time and attention. The driver of the second vehicle "complained of neck and back pain and was therefore transported to an area hospital for treatment," Lose said.

The driver of the third vehicle in line was charged with failure to pay full time and attention.

"Moral of this story," Griffin said, "never take your eyes off the road!"

Did anyone detrmine whether the offender was texting at the time of the accident? Regardless, we need tougher anti-texting-while-driving laws! The Virginia General Assembly is looking into this; they should be encouraged to act decisively!

Hi John -- that was not part of the information police provided to us. We actually had an article about the VA assembly consideration yesterday http://vienna.patch.com/articles/virginia-may-see-stronger-texting-penalties-7d5175e3

@John -- the article speaks to distracted driving in general and does not mention texting as a cause. Distracted driving takes many forms and texting is just one. People need to stop eating, reading, makeup-ing, shaving, etc. and just DRIVE.

Judging by the damage (my husband and I drove by right after this happened), it looked like the driver was either exceeding the speed limit and/or never hit the brakes. You can't really tell from these pictures but "went through the trunk" is pretty accurate.
