Ask The Town: When Are Vienna Roads Resurfaced?

Reader Elizabeth Hedley: We have been in our house over 22 years and our street (St Andrews Dr NE) was not in good condition to begin with, has never been resurfaced. And, I don't know of any systemic plan todo so. How does this happen or not happen?

Kirstyn Barr: The Town constantly monitors the condition of streets and patch pot holes constantly.Each year, our Operations Superintendent inspects the condition of all streets in Townusing an objective rating system, which grades surface condition, cracking, rutting,settling and other defects to provide an overall “pavement condition index,” or streetrating. After factoring in future projects and traffic volumes, we use our limited funds torepave or rebuild the worst ones, which is about six or so a year.

St. Andrews Drive NE currently has a street rating of 82 on a scale of 1 to 100, with 100being the best. We recognize that there are some alligator and shrinkage cracking, butthe street as a whole is solid with no pot holes.
In an effort to stretch out our pavement maintenance dollars this year, Town Councilauthorized a contract for slurry sealing low volume residential streets as a trial. It isinexpensive and if it works well, we will expand the program next year. St. Andrews Drive has low traffic volume and could be a potential candidate for slurry seal in thefuture.
