Council Preview: Public Hearing Tonight On Trash Collection Changes

Program would streamline trash, recycling, bulk pickup

The Vienna Town Council will hold a public hearing tonight on proposed changes to the Town's trash, recycling and special pickup programs.

The council's meeting begins at 8 p.m. at the .

Now, crews pick up trash and recycling from each residence in the Town of Vienna once a week, on separate days. Bulk waste is picked up through a separate process by a different crew with the Town's Special pickup program.

What the Council will consider tonight is

  • How to "define contractor-generated material, household trash, single stream recycling, white goods and yard waste."
  • Language concerning "how trash is to be set out and containers removed after collection."
  • Banning "collection of contractor-generated materials."

The town will also consider a program that would allow residents to place their recycling, trash, brush, yard waste and bulk items at the curb on the same day weekly. It divides the town into into five districts, giving each of them a set day for pickup of all items. This will be discussed further at a 7:30 p.m. "At Your Service" meeting on Tuesday, also at Town Hall.
