Fairfax Mulling Deal for 700 Parking Spots at Silver Line Station

CityLine Partners has proposed more than 700 interim parking spots near the McLean Metro station.

Commuters might be able to park near one of Tysons’ Silver Line Metrorail stations after all.

The Sun Gazette reports that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will vote on a proposal from CityLine Partners later this month that would add more than 700 interim parking spaces near the McLean Metro Station on Route 123.

CityLine, a developer and major player in the county’s long-term vision for Tysons, is proposing to level a building nearby and pave the site for parking spots.

A private company would operate the 6-acre lot, setting up pay machines. The lot would come at no cost to Fairfax County, according to The Sun Gazette. Instead, CityLine would foot the bill for demolition and construction costs, then make its money back from fees for lot usage.

Although some might think parking goes against the future idea of a "walkable, urban" Tysons, officials say it's just temporary.

"Eventually Tysons will be a transit oriented walkable community with circulator bus systems serving the stations," said Sharon Bulova, chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, in a statement to Patch. "In the meantime, however, neighbors of Tysons who wish to take advantage of the new rail stations may need a place to park in order to take the train. CityLine’s interim parking project is a 'bridge' solution, designed to encourage ridership on the Silver Line during its early years as development in and around Tysons is filling in.”

The agreement would last for 10 years. If approved, CityLine would begin work in August.

Residents have been worried about the lack of parking at Silver Line stations in Tysons. Commuters will have to rely on the bus and walking to get to the trains. The county is still looking into other interim parking solutions.

In April, the Board approved CityLine’s plan for a 6.6 million-square-foot development near the McLean station. The development, Scotts Run South, would bring 17 buildings worth of mixed-use development to the new Tysons.
