Four Days Later: Some Vienna Residents Still in Dark

Derecho effects continue to plague town, Fairfax County

Update 9:35 a.m.: As of 9:28 a.m., 43,015 people across Fairfax County were still without power.

Dominion said it will be working in the following areas of Vienna today:

  • Frederick St & Meadow Ln
  • Heatherton Ln
  • Keystone Ln
  • Virginia Center Blvd
  • Birdfoot Ln S off Lawyers Rd
  • Vale Rd & Fox Mill Rd
  • Cedar Ln & Idylwood Rd
  • Old Courthouse Rd West of Hursley Ct

Original 6 a.m.: Dominion Virginia Power estimates 54,530 customers in Fairfax County remain powerless after Friday's derecho, including some Vienna neighborhoods, as of 12:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Many of those customers are along Hunter Mill Road, where an estimated 1,600 customers or more remain in the dark.

"I wish someone could explain how Hunter Mill Rd can remain closed for three days. The only noticeable work was the placement of barriers to stop traffic on a major road," reader Dennis wrote in the comments Tuesday night.

Other neighborhoods with outages of a hundred customers or more include those along the Western end of Chain Bridge Road; along Beulah Road; along Nutley Street near its intersection with I-66; and sections of the Windover Heights Historic District and Old Courthouse and Idylwood Roads.

Each morning, Dominion On Monday, the list included Lawyers Road near Lydia Place, Old Courthouse Road and Drewlaine Drive, Windover Avenue and Lewis Street and Cedar Lane and Idylwood Road.

A list for Tuesday has not yet been released. Vienna Patch will update this article upon its release.

Road Closures

As of about 12:30 a.m. the following roads in and around Vienna-Oakton are closed because of debris, according to 511virginia.org:

  • Hunter Mill Road, from Silk Oak Drive to Tamarack Drive
  • Clarks Crossing Road, near Timberview Court
  • Birdfoot Lane, from Stuart Mill Road to Lawyers Road
  • Juniper Street, off Lee Highway (Merrifield)

The Town of Vienna reported several closures Monday, including:

  • Ayr Hill between East Street and Beulah Road
  • Frederick Street at Meadow Lane
  • Druid Hill Road at Beulah Road

There are also low hanging lines on Moore Street SE by Park Street, Orleans Circle SW and the 500 block of Mashie Drive.

Patch will update that list as more information becomes available Tuesday morning.

If you're without power, consider getting relief from the heat at the closest recreation center or library branch. The Community Center and the Patrick Henry Library are both open today.

Clearing Debris

As , Residents in the Town of Vienna limits can put debris at the curb so long as it meets certain requirements.

County residents can use Fairfax County's two disposal facilities, which accept tree branches that are 20 inches or less in diameter, to rid their yard of debris:

  • I-66 Transfer Station
    4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax
    Monday-Saturday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    Sunday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • I-95 Solid Waste Complex
    9850 Furnace Road, Lorton
    Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    Saturday-Sunday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Special July 4 schedule:

  • I-66 Transfer Station
    9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for deliveries from residents only
    9 a.m. to 6 p.m. brush accepted from commercial haulers
    NO TRASH from commercial haulers
  • I-95 Solid Waste Complex
    7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for deliveries from residents only
    7 a.m. to 6 p.m. brush accepted from commercial haulers
    Trash from commercial haulers accepted from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The facilities charge a minimum $5 fee for residents. Payment may be made by cash, Visa or MasterCard. If residents utilize the county's trash collection services, they must call to schedule a brush pickup at 703-802-3322. Others should contact their own trash collection company for instructions.
