Going Digital, Meet New Fairfax Police Chief, McDonnell Says He'll Give Back Gifts

Here are five things to know about politics and government in Fairfax County.

1. Fairfax County supervisors appointed Lt. Col. Edwin Roessler as the county’s new full-time chief of police Tuesday morning. Roessler had been serving as acting Fairfax County police chief since March 23.

2. Fairfax County has received the third place award in the nationwide 2013 Digital Counties Survey for all jurisdictions with a population greater than 500,000. The award was presented at the National Association of Counties (NACo) annual conference in Fort Worth, Tx., to Supervisor Penny Gross, who was representing the county.

3. Fairfax County also received three National Association of Counties (NACo) 2013 Achievement Awards in the organization’s annual competition. Awards were given to the library system, the Park Authority and the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services

4. Virginia’s Back-to-School sales tax holiday kicks off this weekend. Items exempt from sales tax during this weekend include most articles of clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less each, and school or office supplies that cost $20 or less per item. Read more right here.

5. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said Tuesday he plans to return thousands of dollars in gifts he and his family received from Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams.
