In the Money Race, Vienna Backs Kaine

More residents donating to Democratic candidate for open U.S. Senate Seat

Vienna voters who have contributed to this year's Virginia U.S. Senate race have thrown their weight behind former Virginia Gov. , at least in this stage of the election cycle.

Voters across the area's three zip codes have given about $68,983 to Kaine, an amount more than $20,000 greater than what has been given to likely challenger

A new Washington Post poll this week shows Kaine and Allen in a dead heat, each with 46 percent -- the same split as this time last year, the newspaper noted.

Kaine is also ahead in fundraising statewide, collecting $7,434,457 to Allen's $6,137,826 as of March 31, according to the Virginia Public Access Project. Allen is in a primary race with three fellow Republicans, while Kaine has the Democratic field to himself.

Allen leads the race in donations from in-state donors, with 47.8 percent of his donations coming from Virginia. Kaine's in-state donations account for 31.3 percent, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

However donations of less than $200 total $421,434 for Kaine and $130,700 for Allen.

In fundraising, the two trade first-place in donations honors from ZIP code to ZIP code in Northern Virginia.

Here's how they've done in Vienna:

ZIP Code George Allen Tim Kaine

$15,450 (45.8%) $18,250 (54.2%) 22180 (grouped with 22183, 22116)

$7,200 (51.6%)

$6,750 (48.4%) 22182 $24,922 (36.2%) $43,983 (63.8%)
TOTAL $47,572 $68,983

Allen faces three primary challengers on the ballot June 12. The winner of the primary will face Kaine in the general election, set for Nov. 6.
