Metro to Begin Random Bag Screenings
Transit agency following Boston and New York in stepping up security
Metro Transit Police announced Thursday that they will begin random inspections of passengers' carry-on items.
The security screenings as passengers enter stations will take a few minutes. Police will check for hazardous materials using ionization technology and K-9 units that are trained to detect explosive materials.
Items "will generally not be opened and physically inspected unless the equipment indicates a need for further inspection," according to an announcement on Metro's Web site.
