Morning Commute: Drive Normal Routes With Caution

Roadways may still be blocked with debris, water, Fairfax County says

Fairfax County is asking residents to plan on taking their normal route into work Friday morning, but cautions drivers that Thursday's torrential rain may still interrupt commutes with debris, damaged roads or standing water.

Fairfax County received more than five inches of rain in just a handful of hours Thursday night, and more was predicted in the early hours of Friday morning. The downpours caused accidents and closures and

Drivers should allow extra time for traveling in the morning and sould not attempt to drive through standing water even if the road is not blocked off by cones or tape, the county said.

They offered the following driving tips:

  • State law requires headlights to be on when windshield wipers are in use.
  • Slow your speed for weather and road conditions – and be watchful for fallen trees, power lines, debris and other hazards that may get blown onto or fall across a roadway.
  • Increase distances between vehicles.
  • Buckle up and don’t drive distracted.
