PHOTOS: Inauguration of Terry McAuliffe, 72nd Governor of Virginia, Saturday in Richmond

It was a rainy day Saturday in Richmond, but that didn't seem to dampen the spirits of those in attendance at the inauguration of Virginia's 72nd governor, Terry McAuliffe, 56.

Special guests Saturday at the inauguration included former President Bill Clinton and his wife former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who campaigned for McAuliffe in Falls Church.

Hillary Clinton called Gov. Terry McAuliffe's inauguration speech "first rate," according to a pool report from the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star. "I thought it was a very clear call to action but as he said over and over again an admission of humility about what we need to be doing together — in his case on behalf of the commonwealth or the country," she told the newspaper.

"I was very moved by it."

McAuliffe and his wife Dorothy, who wore a deep red dress with a matching coat and hat, met with Bob McDonnell and his wife. 

"I'm honored to turn the reins over to another Irish Catholic family with five kids," said departing Gov. Bob McDonnell as he presented the key to successor Terry McAuliffe minutes before the Democrat was sworn in, the Associated Press reported. The McAuliffes hosted an open house at the mansion Saturday.

Dorothy McAuliffe is expected to stay at the family home in McLean until children Sally and Peter finish the school year and then they'll move into the Executive Mansion this summer, NBC-12 reported.

McAuliffe's five children attended the ceremony. After the exchange with McDonnell, the two walked across the hall to pose for pictures (see photo in gallery) with former governors of Virginia.

The eight former governors of Virginia who were in attendance at the inauguration were: George Allen, Tim Kaine, Mark Warner, Jim Gilmore, Doug Wilder, Gerald Baliles and Chuck Robb.
