Vienna Voters: Women's Rights Drive Votes at Polls

The right to vote was enough to bring residents out to cast ballots at Vienna precincts, but turnout remains low.

Voters at Vienna precincts have been few and far between for Tuesday's Virginia democratic primary, but those who made it out to the polls did so with mixed motives.

A volunteer for the democratic party who spent the day outside James Madison High School said the few who vote in a primary election typically do so with strong conviction.

When asked what issues influenced who citizens voted for, one voter simply replied "to beat the Republican party."

Others, like Donna Brewer, gave more specific issues that influenced their voting.

"Women's issues and women's reproductive rights, I'd say that's the main thing," Brewer said.

A handful of other voters echoed Brewer's viewpoint on the hot-button issue, claiming that women's rights were a major influence on their ballots.

Most voters said casting a ballot Tuesday was nothing more than making the most of their privilege to vote. Many of these same voters had no particular issue or candidate in mind when attending the polls.

"I don't think you can complain about anybody unless you've voted," Sally Recinos said.

One voter said she had no idea there was a primary Tuesday; she only made it out to vote because her husband brought her.

"I'm ashamed to say that I didn't know there was a primary," the voter said. "I always vote, I never don't vote. [The primary] just wasn't advertised in my opinion."

The same voter said her ballot was influenced by the advertising of one candidate whom she disagreed with. She did not specify what issues mentioned in the advertisements struck a nerve with her.
