Vienna's Memorial Day Tribute Scheduled For 3 p.m. Monday

Tribute at Town Green will feature several elected officials

Vienna's Memorial Day Tribute will feature a retired Marine lieutenant general who spent 35 years on active duty, a career in which he commanded and served at every level of the Marine Corps Operating Forces.

Lt. Gen. Jeffrey W. Oster, retired USMC,  will be the keynote speaker of the town's celebrations, which begin at 3 p.m. on the Town Green, at the corner of Maple Avenue and Mill Street. 

Oster was in Iraq in 2004, serving as the Deputy Administrator and Chief Operating Officer of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA). He stayed there to assist the transfer of government from the CPA to Iraqi control, and to help establish the U.S. Embassy. His other roles range from

  • platoon commander during service of the Republic of Vietnam;
  • Commanding Officer, Marine Detachment, USS Enterprise;
  • Regimental Commander of the 7th Marines; Assistant Division Commander, 3d Marine Division;
  • Commanding General, 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade; and
  •  Commander, Defense Electronics Supply Center, Defense Logistics Agency.

Congressman Gerry Connolly and Mayor Jane Seeman will also speak at the event.
