Want to Talk Metro? Silver Line Meeting Today

Third in series of public meetings on phase 2, public hearing on tap this week.

Fairfax County residents will get two chances to discuss Phase 2 of Metro's Silver Line this week.

The third and final meeting in a series of public meetings on the project -- a county effort to inform the public about the funding of the $2.7 billion project and gather input on what to name the stations -- will take place at 7 p.m. Monday at the Fairfax County Government Center.

The Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on the Silver Line and Phase 2, which will extend west from Wiehle Ave in Reston to Dulles International Airport and locations in Loudoun County, at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at the Fairfax County Government Center, but will not be discussing station names.

Funding for the entire Dulles Metrorail project from Falls Church to Loudoun, including the first phase currently under construction, is split among four sources: 16.1 percent from Fairfax County, 4.8 percent from Loudoun County, 4.1 percent from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) and 75 percent from Dulles Toll Road revenue.

According to officials, Fairfax County will contribute anywhere from $900 to $965 million for both phases of the construction.

How exactly the county will pay its portion of the project isn't clear.

Aside from funding, the meetings are also to discuss names for the stations. More than 12,000 people have taken ; Many of the names initially proposed by Fairfax officials have been called confusing or dull. The survey closes on Wednesday.

Monday's hearing begins at 7 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center conference rooms 9/10, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax.
