Residents are still without water Tuesday as town crews hustle to repair three water main breaks across southeast and southwest Vienna.

A "road closed" sign and detour arrows stood in the road outside Vienna Tiny Tots Village, a preschool and daycare center at Courthouse Road and Cherry Street.

An employee at the daycare said they were still without water, and were shutting down for the day. Employees were calling parents to come pick up their children, she said.

Can you please get a quote from someone at the Town about why this is happening? Are we being sabotaged or attacked? Will all the other parts of town be affected very soon?
david mccullough July 10, 2012 at 02:10 PM
Are you serious? Sabotage or attack? How about old pipes?
Erica R. Hendry July 10, 2012 at 02:23 PM
Hi, We already contacted the town but didn't hear back in time to include it in this article. We're planning a followup once we do -- everyone is out at the breaks. The towns pipes are old, like David said, and the heat probably didn't help -- but an official town answer is probably better informed and more in-depth than mine. We'll keep you posted. Thanks, Erica

Huge tree down across Center St. just north of Church. Happened about an hour ago. Appears just one parked car hit, no occupied vehicles hit, no one injured - thank goodness!
David Salzberg July 10, 2012 at 03:22 PM
Mu understanding is the tree landed on a parked car and a moving minivan. The minivan had the driver and three kids in it, but no one was injured, and the van is damaged, but drivable.

Hi -- we have another article about this on the site, if you go to the homepage. I was just out there taking pictures -- it is an ENORMOUS tree. Give me a few minutes and I'll have them up! Erica
Kim July 10, 2012 at 03:26 PM
Thanks for the update. The people I spoke with when I walked by didn't mention anyone else getting hit. Hope everyone in the van has recovered from the shock.

For years the Town Council has been trying to work with Fairfax County to sell them the town water system (which would result in lower rates for Vienna residents). Unfortunately, Fairfax won't play ball because of the aging infrastructure. Erica, you might want to talk to Edythe Kelleher about this issue. She's been on the front lines of this for years -
Erica R. Hendry July 10, 2012 at 04:27 PM
Thanks Groovis, we've talked to Edythe (and others .... Howard Springsteen and Mike Polychrones included) about this over the years. We are still putting together an update for later today/the morning with new town comment, but in the meantime, here is some background on the issue http://vienna.patch.com/articles/town-council-weighs-pros-cons-of-selling-water-and-sewer-systems http://vienna.patch.com/articles/vienna-water-lawsuit-on-hold http://vienna.patch.com/articles/town-to-move-forward-with-water-sewer-hikes http://vienna.patch.com/articles/rate-hikes-excessive-some-residents-say http://vienna.patch.com/articles/vienna-sues-board-of-supervisors-over-water-issue

Good thing I read this before heading out... that's usually my escape route to avoid turning left onto Lawyer's Road. I hope everyone is OK.
Amelie Krikorian July 10, 2012 at 04:32 PM
I meant about the tree, not the water...
Erica R. Hendry July 10, 2012 at 04:35 PM
Amelie, here's an update (and pictures) -- nobody was injured http://vienna.patch.com/articles/photos-tree-on-center-street-damages-car-power-lines#photo-10619215
Amelie Krikorian July 10, 2012 at 08:20 PM
I just drove past the water main break in front of Vienna Tiny Tots about half an hour ago and they are still working on it.
Amelie Krikorian July 10, 2012 at 08:22 PM
Thanks Erica. I drove down Church to Great Harvest and saw that the tree had been stripped of limbs about an hour ago, so progress is happening.
Erica R. Hendry July 10, 2012 at 08:46 PM
Thanks Amelie -- I actually just got an update from the town (which I am about to add to the top of the story) that says water has been restored there and they are reopening shortly.
