The Portsmouth Fire Department asks all residents to help clear snow from fire hydrants today. 

The Portsmouth EMA says, as of Monday morning, 297 Portsmouth residents remain without power. 

"Power should be restored to Riverside and nearby streets in Island Park by 2 p.m. today. Every customer in Portsmouth should have their power restored no later than 11 p.m. this evening," according to the EMA. 

Debris removal plans are underway to address the large volume of fallen trees and branches on the ground. Any debris that is creating an immediate hazard should be reported to the Public Works department at 683-0362 or the Portsmouth Fire department at 683-1200.


9 a.m. — Portsmouth extends parking ban until 7 p.m. tonight. 


1:04 — Governor allowing limited travel to warming shelters, including Middletown's Gaudet Middle School and Tiverton Middle School. No word yet on opening of Portsmouth Middle School as shelter. 

12:59 — Areas of Island Park and East Main Road are reporting the power is back on! Let's hope for more news like this throughout the afternoon! 

10:14 — Approximately 44,001 National Grid customers without power on Aquidneck Island. The Middletown Middle School is open as a warming shelter. 

9:22 — The Portsmouth Library will be closed Saturday. Please post your closings in the comment section below! 

9:19 — Brace yourself. National Grid says some customers could be without power for "several days," reports The Providence Journal. The blizzard struck transmission lines, including those on Aquidneck Island, which could take days to repair. 

9:13 — All of Aquidneck Island is reportedly without power. 

9 a.m. — Most of Portsmouth awoke Saturday to no power since power lines are down throughout town, according to the Portsmouth EMA. When power will be restored is unknown, according to the Portsmouth EMA blog

The Gaudet Middle School in Middletown will open as a warming shelter at 9:30 a.m. today. The Prudence Island Fire Station is also open for those without heat on the island. 

Plans are in the works to open the Portsmouth Middle School as a shelter. Further details will be announced later today. Workers have been preparing the school since 5:30 a.m. Saturday. 

The Newport and Jamestown bridges have been reopened to commercial traffic. 

All gas stations in town appear to be closed, according to reports. 


10:30-11 — After nonstop flickering of lights that seemed to have no end, power went out in nearly every household in town. As of 11 p.m. last night, more than 2,050 residents were without power; however, it is strongly believe the entire town is without power. 

1 p.m. — Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) monitoring winds speeds; could result in later closing of Mount Hope and Newport Pell bridges. 

12:26 NWS issues Coastal Flood Advisory for 5 p.m. tonight through 8 a.m. Saturday. Areas near the coast could experience flooding during high tides. 

12:24 — Portsmouth EMA asks residents to help firefighters clear snow from fire hydrants during and after storm. "A snow-obstructed fire hydrant can cause firefighters to lose precious minutes during the most critical time in their response to a fire," according to EMA. 

12:30Governor declares State of Emergency ahead of storm, reports NBC 10 News. 

11:45 — RIPTA bus service to be suspended at noon, literally in 15 minutes. The DOT recommends all drivers to stay off roads this afternoon. 

11:39 — Clements' Market to close early at 3 or 4 p.m., weather permitting. 

11:23 — The Portsmouth Abbey is closing this afternoon. The transfer station will close early at 2 p.m. Any other places staying open after noon? Let readers know in the comment section below! 

11 a.m. — Snow is starting to stick! 

9:09 a.m. — Started snowing lightly about 45 minutes ago with only a dusting showing in spots.

10 p.m. — The Pennfield School will be closed Friday. 

9:57 — The Portsmouth Free Public Library will be closed on Friday. The Portsmouth Transfer Station will close early Friday at 2 p.m. and all day on Saturday. 

9:50 — Roger Williams University, CCRI, Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island are all closed Friday. 

6 p.m. — All Portsmouth schools are closed Friday. All afternoon activities for Friday and Saturday are also cancelled. 

3:17 — Parents are reporting receiving a call from Portsmouth school district that schools are closed Friday. Middletown, Newport, Little Compton schools are also closed. The Community College of Rhode Island has also cancelled classes. 

1:48 — Aquidneck Island Christian Academy, St. Philomena and All Saints Academy closed Friday due to pending blizzard. 

11:58: CORRECTION: Only the Aquidneck Island Christian Academy has cancelled classes for Friday so far. Portsmouth Patch received incorrect information about other school closings. 

10:54 a.m. — The Portsmouth Police Department has issued a parking ban from Friday at 7 a.m. through Sunday at 7 a.m. 

Portsmouth's Emergency Management Agency  has also issued this list of what you can do to prepare for the storm. These are safety tips are recommended by the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency.

10:52 a.m. — Keep checking this page for updates about Winter Storm Nemo's progress and how it is affecting Portsmouth. Aside from the usual government and town agency posts that will be presented to you, this is where you can find school and business closings as well as downed trees and power lines, power outages and other dangerous situations.

"Update: Power to be restored to every Portsmouth resident by 11 p.m.! Island Park by 2 p.m. today!" Now Island Park isn't part of Portsmouth???

Island Park is being restored first by 2, but all residents should have power by 11.
