Shepherd's Center of Oakton Vienna Announces Guest Speaker, author Tim Wendel ("Aummer of '68-The Season That Changed Baseball and America-Forever") For Final 2012 Event of Their Lunch n' Life Series

Pictured is Tim Wendel, novelist and author of nine books, including "Summer of '68," "High Heat," "Castro's Curveball" and "Red Rain".  Mr. Wendel will be the guest speaker at the final Lunch n’ Life event for 2012 hosted by the Shepherd’s Center of Oakton-Vienna (SCOV).  His writings have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Huffington Post, The Potomac Review, Gargoyle, GQ and Esquire.

Open to the public, SCOV’s Lunch n’ Life series provides opportunities for enrichment, learning and socialization for seniors. In 2011 the Shepherd’s Center’s 190 volunteers provided 10,000 hours of service for older adults 50+.  In the past six months alone the nonprofit has seen a sharp increase in new clients needing their services.  SCOV was recently honored to be chosen for inclusion in the 2012-13’s Catalogue For Philanthropy: Greater Washington, as well as being named “Nonprofit of the Year” by the Vienna Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Vienna, VA – The Shepherd’s Center of Oakton-Vienna (SCOV) announces the guest speaker for their last in a series of  Lunch ‘n Life events for 2012 will be Tim Wendel, author and novelist.  Mr. Wendel will be speaking about his latest book, “Summer of ’68-The Season that Changed Baseball and America-Forever”.

 

In 2011 SCOV’s 190 volunteers provided 10,000 hours of service for older adults 50+.  In the past six months alone SCOV has seen a sharp increase in new clients needing the services they provide.

 

SCOV provides care and support to seniors in the Oakton and Vienna community. In addition, the agency also serves seniors in regions of Reston and Fairfax, VA.  Their Lunch ‘n Life series is open to the public. 

 

Founded in 1997, SCOV is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to providing opportunities for senior adults to seek rewarding lives and to live independently in their homes for as long as possible.  The Shepherd’s Center provides volunteer and participation opportunities for adults 50+ to live fulfilling lives through lifelong learning, social programs and service to the community.  S C O V ’ s dedicated group of volunteers give their t i m e, talent and commitment to serve the elderly who are no longer able to drive.  Volunteers drive seniors to medical appointments or to purchase groceries, visiting or calling those who are homebound and providing vital office assistance. These services are always provided free of charge.  In addition to these services, continuing education is a vital part of the Shepherd’s Center mission to keep seniors engaged and active. Some of the classes offered include bridge, t’ai chi, health seminars and topics highlighting current affairs. The bi-monthly Caregivers Support Group offers caregivers a compassionate place to share similar stories and challenges as they care for an adult family member.  The Shepherd’s Center of Oakton-Vienna receives no government support and depends on the generosity of supporting congregations, businesses, civic groups and individual donors. Volunteers are the heart of this organization and many volunteer opportunities are available.
