George C. Marshall High School Graduates 314 Seniors

Cheers and whistles echoed throughout D.A.R Constitution Hall on Friday morning as George C. Marshall High School graduated the Class of 2011.

Commencement speaker Jason G. Green, associate counsel to President Barack Obama, and faculty speaker Hendrick Booz gave the 314 seniors last pieces of advice in the Washington, D.C. venue – including some thoughts from Obama himself on the keys to success.

"This morning [Obama] stopped me before I came over and grabbed me and he said, 'Jason, tell them we need them to get involved, tell them to be confident, tell 'em to work hard,'" he said, in his best Obama voice. "I thought, 'Those indeed are the keys to success and are worthy of your freedom.'"

Drawing upon the legacy of the man the school was named after, and his own great-, great-grandfather's founding of a schoolhouse for black students after the Civil War, Green urged the graduates to "leave a lasting legacy" in the community and to not allow life's pressures to make them wait.

"I fear what might have happened had Gen. Marshall or even my great-, great-grandpa Gary if they had only been willing to commit to helping their communities once things all settled down a bit," he said.

Booz, a Marshall High School English teacher, told the class of 2011 it is through working with a group that one can be empowered.

"You are told to follow your passion, chart your own course, march to the beat of your drummer … follow your dreams and find yourself," he said. "The singular pursuit of your self-centered actions will not help society and it will surely not help you."

Booz urged the graduating class to work within a system.

"Success comes from working together," he said. "Find your inner-self through others rather than despite them. … find yourself, but find it within a system."

Senior class officers Ashton Garriott and Kellie Marsh presented the class' gift: three flat screen televisions for the new lobby, which will  be renovated this summer.

Among the awards honored to graduates was the Statesman award, given to David Fletcher Dziedzic and Rebecca Lynn Stripe.
