Hood Selected As Principal For Thoreau

New middle school principal will begin Jan. 17

concluded its weeks-long principal search Wednesday, naming Gregory Hood, who has worked in various roles throughout Fairfax County Public Schools for the past 15 years, as its new leader.

Hood, now the coordinator of the system's School Counseling and College Success program, will begin at the school Jan. 17.

"He is very excited to work with the staff and community," Assistant Cluster II Superintendent Jim Kacur wrote in an email Wednesday.

Hood first came to FCPS in 1996 as a classroom teacher and school counselor at Key Middle School in Springfield, Va.

From 2001 through 2003, he worked as a test administration specialist and then an instructional employment specialist before becoming the director of student services at nearby Longfellow Middle School in Falls Church.

In 2007, he returned to Springfield to become assistant principal at Irving Middle School until 2010, when he accepted the counseling coordinator position.

Hood has a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Baltimore and a master's in edcuation from Johns Hopkins University. He also attended the LEAD Fairfax program at George Mason University to earn a certification in administration and supervision.

Former Principal Mark Greenfelder announced Nov. 1 to become principal of West Springfield High School, his alma mater, after leading Thoreau for eight years. Greenfelder began there Dec. 1. Former Cluster II Director Ulysses Cox in November while the system launched its search; he'll continue to act in that role until Hood begins.
