Kilmer Among Top Thomas Jefferson Feeder Schools

Vienna middle school sends fourth highest number of students in Fairfax County

Kilmer Middle School sent 12 more students to this year -- a jump that makes it the fourth largest feeder school in the county.

Kilmer sent 43 students this year, up from 31 in 2011. The school attracted 3,243 applicants this year for the 480 slots in its freshman class. sends the most students to T.J., accounting for 76 of those students.

T.J., ranked this week by U.S. News and World Report, has drawn some criticism in recent years about its admissions. Some parents have said the school admits a disproportionate number of students from the same middle schools and that more white males are admitted than female or minority students.

It's a shame that other data are redacted. All the schools listed here are AAP magnet schools (formerly known as GT centers). It would be nice to get a sense of how many students from regular middle schools are admitted to Thomas Jefferson, and how many are coming from private schools. Looking at this chart, students not in an AAP magnet center will think they don't have a chance. And maybe they don't?

L Bligh I'll see if I can get more information from FCPS; I do have a list of other middle schools but no numbers since they are under 10 students, but it would likely still be helpful. Look for an update soon.
