Lacrosse: Madison Boys Rally Past Fairfax

Big second quarter sets up Warhawk win

Using a balanced scoring attack and six goals in the second quarter, the boys lacrosse team (8-4) beat the Fairfax Rebels (3-6) on Thursday night by the score of 12-3 in a Liberty District contest. 

Seven Warhawks scored in the contest, led by senior attackman Kellen Schmitz, who had 4 goals.

Fairfax opened the scoring in the first period with a goal by senior midfielder Austin Perryman.  Madison answered back with a goal from sophomore attackman Brett Simeck that was assisted by juinior midfielder Kyle Rowe.  Madison added another goal from Schmitz that was assisted by Simeck before the Rebels answered back with an unassisted goal from sophomore attackman Cory Brown.  The first period ended with the score knotted at 2-2.

The second period opened with an unassisted goal from junior midfielder Ian Cooke at 11:52.  Madison followed with unassisted goals from Schmitz at 6:27 and junior attackman Kyle Mancini at 5:06 in the second.  Senior Ian attackman Russiello scored at 4:15 in the second with an assist from freshman attackman Robbie McLallen.  Schmitz closed out the second period scoring with two more goals, the first unassisted and the second assisted by Simeck.  The score was 8-2 at the half.

The third quarter was mostly defense on both sides of the ball.  Madison scored on an unassisted goal from junior attackman Nick Gabriel at 2:45 remaining in the period.  The scoring closed out in the third with an unassisted goal from senior midfielder Connor Strock.  The score was 10-2 after 3 periods.

Fairfax got back on the board with a fast break goal at 10:42 in the fourth period.  Madison answered with an unassisted goal from Kyle Mancini with 4:44 remaining.  Gabriel closed out the Madison scoring with a goal assisted by McLallen with 3:33 remaining and the game ended with the score 12-3.

The Madison defense was lead by junior Nick Hoy, sophomore Ben Headley and junior Nate Mancini.  Junior goalie Matt Hayden had 5 saves in the game and Jake Collie came in and had 1 save in fourth.

Kyle Rowe won 14 of 16 faceoffs and led the team with 3 ground balls. 

The Madison Warhawks are back in action on Monday in a key Liberty District matchup at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn.
