Summer reading isn't all that bad when it's done on the beach, by the pool or when there are a few moments to relax.  It can be even more fun when reading the same book among a group of friends.

James Madison High School set out with that idea last summer, and as students head off this week for summer break, it's back again.

The school's One Book, One School, One Community common book project will focus on "The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green for this summer.

"We wanted to select a book that is compelling, well-written and tells a good story," Madison High School Librarian Krissy Ronan.

Ronan said a group of parents and teachers began reading books in January to find the right one for the summer reading project.  They agreed  "The Fault in Our Stars" was a good fit because it was a best seller and other students have enjoyed the tale.

The book is about a 16-year-old teen named Hazel who has terminal cancer, and despite her tragic diagnosis, finds love and friendship at her kids with cancer support group. The book delves into subjects such as life, love and death in a powerful way.
When Madison students return in the fall, the SGA has planned events focusing on the subject matter of the book.

"The program also gives the school an opportunity to do school-wide events for cancer, including fundraising and awareness activities that will take place in the fall," Ronan said.

Teachers are encouraged to read the book during the summer months and may incorporate the book into next year's curriculum if it is appropriate.

"The most important thing, is to encourage reading over the summer," Ronan stressed. I

f students would like to tweet about their progress with the book, they can Email TFIOSMadison or tweet @MadLibrary pics.  Use #TFIOSMadison.

There will be a contest in the fall for pictures tweeted from the furthest distance and for most original photos. The book can be purchased on amazon.com or Madison has partnered with AKJ Books to offer a discounted copy.
