The closest of the races was the Men's 2nd Eight, with only a little over a second separating them from first-place finisher Woodson.

On perhaps the warmest day of what has been an unusually cold water season, the James Madison High School Crew team ended is first regatta of the season with two first place and three second places finishes at the Polar Bear Regatta on the Occoquan River.

The Madison Women’s 1st Eight continued their more than three-year undefeated streak on the Occoquan with a first place finish over Oakton with a time of 5:37.

The Men’s Junior 4 also finished first with a time of 5:55, leaving open water between the second place finisher, Fairfax.

The Men’s 1st Eight finished behind Jefferson, with a time of 5:04, while the Women’s 2nd Eight finished just seconds behind Robinson with a time of 5:57.

The Women’s First Varsity 4, racing in a very competitive heat, finished in sixth place, with a time of 6:42, faster than several boats in the Women’s 2nd and 3rd Eights.

The water season thus far, has been unusually cold, cutting down practice time at the Occoquan by nearly 50 percent, which is particularly critical for new boat configurations and novices who are learning to row.

Next week, Madison races at the Regional Park regatta which will feature the first freshman and novice races of the seasons. Stay tuned!
