Madison Looks Ahead To Playoffs After Marshall Shutout
On Senior Night, Warhawks cruise to 24-0 victory over Statesmen, earn Rotary Bowl trophy
The Madison Warhawks charged into the playoffs Friday night, thumping their cross-town rivals the Marshall Statesmen 24-0 to end the regular season at 7-3 overall and 6-1 in the Liberty District.
The high-energy win came on Senior Night and was fueled by a tribute to Madison’s senior players and the leadership they’ve provided all year.
The game featured solid performances by Madison’s offense, defense, and special teams, and kept the coveted Rotary Bowl Trophy at Madison for another year.
Quarterback Dan Powers led the Madison offense with arguably his best
performance of the year. Powers, who was sharp all night, threw touchdown
passes of 30 yards to Ben Sanford to open the scoring and 8 yards to Tom House for Madison’s final points. Powers was also the Warhawk’s leading rusher with 43 yards on six carries. Nick Dorka added a 33-yard field goal in the second quarter and Grant Hoffman ran 3 yards for a touchdown to open the second half.
The Warhawk defense, which overpowered the Statesmen offense all night, forced turnovers in four consecutive possessions and denied Marshall any real scoring opportunities for the entire game. Salvatore Rahner, Walker McCandrew, and Jordan Durham each had interceptions and Rahner recovered a fumble to end Marshall drives. Linebackers Nick Hoy and Dan Schwab lead the swarming Warhawk defense with five solo tackles and 13 assisted tackles between them.
Madison’s special teams kept Marshall pinned deep in their own territory all night
with long kicks and excellent coverage. Schwab forced a turnover recovering a
Marshall fumble after a towering 54-yard punt by Dorka.
Head Coach Lenny Schultz and players now face their biggest challenge of the year as they prepare to square off against South County (7-3 overall) in the first round of the Virginia AAA Northern Region Division 5 playoffs. The game will be at 7:30 pm Friday at South County High School.
