Marshall Swimmers, Divers Earn State Titles

Marshall boys team places 10th overall

Two members of the Marshall High School swim and dive team won state titles this week in the Virginia AAA State Championships.

Senior Katherine Van Winkle won the girls diving title with a score of 418.9, about 50 points ahead of the next highest scorer. The score qualifies Van Winkle, who won this year's Liberty District title and placed second in the Northern Region Championships, for All-America consideration.

Senior Cyrus Hashemi, a nationally-ranked swimmer who already broke district records this season, won titles and set two new state records in the 100 freestyle, with a time of 45.39, and the 200 freestyle, with a time of 1:39.83.

Van Winkle will dive at the University of Southern California next year, while Hashemi heads to the program at UNC-Wilmington.

The Marshall boys’ team placed 10th overall with a score of 88.

It was a banner year for the swim and dive program under first-year coach Matthew Bell.

At 3-3 on the season, the boys’ team this year has matched its number of wins over the previous three years combined. The girls’ team also saw its first regular season win in at least 10 years, and also broke an 18-year-old Marshall High School 400 Free Relay record at the Liberty District meet.

Several swimmers also earned first place titles _

  • 200 Yard IM: Andrew Nyce, Eighth Place, 1:55.91 | Logan Hirka, 13th Place, 1:59.11
  • 200 Yard Freestyle Relay: Hashemi, Nyce, Hirka, Jacob Freck, Sixth Place
