Marshall Wrestlers Make History

Sixth-place Northern Region finish is highest in Liberty District; two Madison wrestlers also win weight classes

's wrestling team finished sixth of 32 teams at the Northern Region High School Championships this past weekend at Hayfield High School.

Marshall was the highest finishing team from the Liberty District; it was also the Statesmen's best finish since 1993.

Senior James Cusack led the way for the Statesmen, winning the 113 pound championship in a convincing 8-0 major decision. Matt Crawford was runner-up in the heavyweight division. Both qualified for the State Championships next weekend at Robinson High School.

A total of seven Marshall wrestlers finished in the top eight of their respective weight classes. Joining Cusack and Crawford were Sam White (195) and Christian Valencia (106), each of whom finished sixth, and Jimbo Briody (126), Abel Tesfai (132), and Tyler Snook (145).   

Vienna had another top-ranking team with , whose team finished 10th. Robert Dooley won the 120-pound championship in a thrilling 3 to 1 overtime match and Nick Hoy won a close 3 to 2 match to claim the 182-pound championship. Both advance to states.

Kolton Starr (113) placed sixth, and Connor Eckhardt (138) placed in the top eight of his weight class.
