Walk/Bike Challenge Day Four: The Homestretch

Week-long initiative ends on Friday

The number of students who are walking and biking to Wolftrap and Vienna Elementary Schools have exceeded the number of those schools' "deemed walkers" on some days this week.

Of the 389 kids at Vienna Elementary School, 82 are deemed walkers -- students who live within a mile of the school that do not have to content with any major hazards like crossing a busy road. Each day this week, the number of students walking to the school has been almost one and a half times that number, said Sean McCall, a Safe Routes to School Parent volunteer. Even on Tuesday, the lowest turnout day, the participation rate was more than 100 percent of the walking population, he said.

At Wolftrap, there are 597 students, 213 of whom are deemed walkers. The school exceeded that number on Wednesday, and came just three short today.
