Basketball: Madison Girls Gun for Liberty Title

Madison bounced the No.1 South Lakes High School girls basketball team from the Liberty District Tournament in a 55-52 upset this week, earning the team another shot at the Liberty District Crown.

Madison's Megan LeDuc hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to seal the victory for the Warhawks.

Madison is playing McLean for the Liberty District Title at 5:45 p.m. Friday.

In the semis, the Seahawks fell behind in the second quarter, when the fourth-seed Warhawks held them to just seven points. South Lakes trailed 31-23 at halftime. The Seahawks caught up in the second half and were down by two when Abigail Rendle hit a jumper on the baseline to tie with four seconds to go, but Leduc's shot from half court put the game away.

"I'm proud of the way we competed," South Lakes coach Christy Winters Scott said. "Abigail Rendle was outstanding from beginning to end, and the defensive pressure from Chauntell Dunbar was a key for us."

During the regular season, South Lakes (20-4, 12-2 Liberty) split the meetings with Madison, defeating the Warhawks 55-45 in January and falling to them 45-42 at home on Feb. 4.

Rendle led South Lakes with 25 points and 5 rebounds. Madison (16-8, 10-4) was led by Leduc with 23 points and Katie Kerrigan with 15.

Regardless of the outcome of Friday's game, South Lakes, along with Madison, McLean and Fairfax, still advances to next week's Northern Region Tournament.
