Football: Warhawks' Season Comes to an End
Madison suffers first-round playoffs loss to South County
Madison's season ended in a stinging 19-14 defeat at the hands of the South County Stallions in the first round of the playoffs Friday night at Madison High School.
The loss ended a successful season for the Warhawks that saw the team post an 8-3 record under second-year Head Coach Lenny Schultz.
Defense was the name of the game early with both teams struggling to establish their offenses. The Stallions kicked a 33-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead and seemed in control after an 82-yard touchdown pass for a 9-0 lead midway through the second quarter. However, the Warhawks offense came alive mixing runs and passes to score two second-quarter touchdowns and take a 14-9 lead into the half.

As the second half began, South County grabbed the momentum and moved the ball deep into Madison territory on a 13-play drive. But as they have done all year, the Warhawk defense dug deep and held the Stallions for no gain on fourth and short. Madison put together its own long drive and seemed poised to extend its lead before giving the ball back to the Stallions on an end-zone interception.
As the final quarter began with Madison maintaining a slim 14-9 lead, the game turned on two plays by Madison's special teams which have played at a high level all year. Twice, the Warhawks turned the ball over to the Stallions deep in Madison territory, on a wayward punt snap and a blocked punt. The turnovers led to 10 South County points that proved to be the winning margin.

It was a tough ending for an extremely close Madison team that played with heart and emotion all year. But as the season ends, the Warhawk players can reflect on their hard work and successes — and look forward to more good things to come under the leadership of Coach Schultz and his outstanding team of coaches and staff.
