Football: Warhawks Shut Out in First District Loss

Stone Bridge offense overpowers Madison High

The Madison Warhawks hosted the Stone Bridge Bulldogs on Friday night in a battle for first place in the Liberty District. The Bulldogs, who rolled to a 42-0 victory, remained undefeated and showed why they are one of the best teams in the metropolitan area. The loss dropped Madison's overall record to 7-2 and its District record to 5-1.

Stone Bridge took the opening kickoff and capped a 10-play drive with a 25-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead. Madison's offense tried without success to establish the run against the big and fast Bulldog defense and had to punt early and often. The Warhawk defense started strong and twice stopped the powerful Bulldog running game on fourth and short. The first quarter ended with Madison down, 7-0.

Stone Bridge broke the game open in the second quarter, exploding for 28 points on scoring plays of 75, 21, 45 and 25 yards. Madison, which was limited to two first downs in the first half, turned the ball over three times on two fumbles and an interception and trailed 35-0 at halftime.

The Bulldogs scored once more in the third quarter on a 55-yard pass before down-shifting their offense and running out the game clock. Madison's offense was held in check all night and was limited to three first downs and 43 yards in total offense.

Stone Bridge is easily the class of the region and has a 55-1 Liberty District record since entering the District in 2005 (the one loss was to Madison in 2009). The Bulldogs' blueprint for success starts in the weight room and its players work hard throughout the year. Madison Head Coach Lenny Schultz and his staff are building a Warhawk football program that encourages players to work out all year, bond as a team, and grow as leaders. Although it was a tough loss Friday night, the results of the hard work of Madison coaches and players can be seen in all the Warhawks have accomplished over the last two seasons — with more good things to come.
