After Close First Half, Madison Pulls Past Marshall For Win

Warhawks earn 14th victory of the season

After a close first half against cross-town rival , the girls basketball team exploded in the second half of Thursday's game for a 75-40 win.

The Statesmen kept the contest close throughout the first half, but a 17-10 scoring blitz by the Warhawks in the third period put the game out of reach and Madison cruised to its 14th victory of the season.

The Warhawks got off to a quick start and led by double-digits mid-way through the second period. The spirited Statesmen rallied to close the deficit and trailed by 9 points at the end of the first half, 35-26.

The third period proved decisive, as Madison tightened its defense and kept rolling on offense to extend its lead to 16 points by the end of the period.  Marshall continued to battle, but the Statesmen could not match the Warhawks’ offensive firepower.

Madison freshman forward Kelly Koshuta had another dominant game with 28 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Junior guards Megan Henshaw and Megan LeDuc were also outstanding, combining for 28 points.  Henshaw scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, while LeDuc scored 13 points and dished out 10 assists.

Sophomore guard Katie Kerrigan scored 7 points and distributed 6 assists and junior forward Kelsey Ross played another strong game with 5 rebounds, 2 points and a block. Senior forward Bethany Hartt and senior guard Lindsey Joost helped control the boards with 7 and 6 rebounds respectively.  Freshman guards Jana Tremba and Mamie Henshaw also scored for the Warhawks.

Senior guards Maddie O’Beirne and Rachel Waldron led the Marshall Statesmen in scoring with 10 points apiece. Amanda Denny added nine points and  Rebekah Koch notched four while contributing tough defense against the Warhawks.
