The James Madison Women’s First and Second Varsity Boats showed once again their dominance in Virginia High School Rowing at the Virginia Scholastic State Championships, as top medalists for the past several years.

The Women’s Second Eight earned a first place trophy, narrowly defeating TC Williams. The Women’s First Eight earned a second place medal, narrowly losing to TC Williams in one of the most exciting races of the day.

In other races, the Men’s First Varsity Eight advanced to the finals and finished fifth in the state in a very competitive field.  The Men’s Second Eight raced in the fastest heat of the day, posting a faster time than the second place finisher in the second heat, but was not able to advance.  The Men’s Junior Four fought also fought hard in its preliminary heat but did not advance to the finals.

This weekend, Madison rowers travel to Philadelphia to participate in the Stotesbury Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River. The Stotesbury Cup is the oldest and largest high school regatta in North America, featuring over 5,000 competitors.

Madison will race Men’s and Women’s Freshmen, First and Second Varsity Eight Boats as well as Men’s and Women’s Lightweight and Junior Fours.
In 2013, the Women’s First and Second Varsity Eights earned first and second place trophies respectively, while the Men’s Freshman Eight earned fourth place in the finals.

The forecast for Friday’s first day of racing is heavy rain which should make for some interesting, wet and challenging races.
