Madison Football Slips By McLean

Fumble recovery in fourth quarter secures victory; Marshall football swept by Langley 35-0

The Madison High School Warhawks beat McLean, 17-16, in a fiercely-contested game finally decided when Manny Momoh recovered a McLean fumble in the final seconds to thwart the Highlander’s last drive. The win brought Madison Football's record to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the Liberty District.

Madison wasted early scoring opportunities with a blocked field goal attempt and a fumble deep in McLean territory in the first quarter. McLean opened the scoring with an eight-play drive to take an early 6-0 lead.

Madison got its offense back on track in the second quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run by Jacob Hall and a 22-yard field goal by Nick Dorka to take a 10-6 lead at the half.

Madison began the second half with a successful onsides kick and seemed poised to take control of the game, but gave the ball back to McLean on a tipped-pass interception. McLean converted the turnover into a touchdown and later added a long field goal to take a 16-10 lead.

Needing a touchdown to go in front, Madison quarterback Dan Powers found his favorite target, Tom House, for several long passes including what proved to be the game-winning 14-yard touchdown pass.

In the fourth quarter, McLean, which had lost its starting quarterback to injury in the first half, twice drove the ball into Warhawk territory, but Madison was up to the challenge. In the final two drives, Madison’s Evan Jacquez had three sacks, Jordan Durham and Jacob Hall each contributed sacks, and Salvatore Rahner and Max Ehrsam made big hits to break-up passes. Dan Schwab had another strong game on
defense and led all defenders with 5 solo tackles and 12 assists.

Madison’s next game, Homecoming, will be on Friday, September 30, at home against Langley.
