Video: Vienna Woods Edges Vienna Aquatic For Division Three Title

Hometown rivals had a showdown Saturday for the crown

and Vienna Aquatic Swim Clubs are just blocks apart, separated by less than a mile in the Southwest corner of Vienna.

But the hadn't swam against its hometown rival until Saturday, when the undefeated teams competed for the Northern Virginia Swimming League Division III title.

Vienna Woods emerged the victors, beating Vienna Aquatic 212 to 190 on one of the hottest days of the year.

Despite losing to their neighboring club – to which many of their classmates belong – Vienna Aquatics kept pace with the competition and set several records as well.

Some races kept spectators at the edge of their seats more than others: Vienna Aquatics' 200 M Boys Medley Relay (15-18) – which includes Matt Chappell, Ricky Menendez, David Fallavollita and Alexander J Ripley  – placed first with a time of 1:55.51, just a .45 seconds ahead of the 1:55.96 recorded by Vienna Woods' Jackson T Simon, Michael R Luciani, Evan T Owens and Eric R Tutterow.

And a similar scene played out in the 100 M Girls Medley Relay (9-10), when Vienna Woods' Lauren M Meier, Emma E Smith, Keara A Gordon and Maisie M Biles finished with a time of 1:19.65 – just .06 seconds ahead of the 1:19.71 recorded by VAC's Morgan Rushforth, Katherine Mottola, Veronika Miller and Anna Sullivan.

The Division Individual Championships are scheduled 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The location has not been announced. The league's All Stars meet will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 6 at Waynewood.
