Vienna’s MVP Terps Sweep Mickie Gordon Tournament in Purcellville

U14 team posts 50 runs

Vienna’s MVP Terps (U14) won the Mickie Gordon Tournament over Memorial Day Weekend by posting 50 runs and surrendering only seven in five games.

In the opening game at Fireman’s Field, Pete Nielsen with John Cerretani in relief combined to shut down the Western Loudoun Thunder 5-1. Hits came from Connor Grammes, Patrick Ryan, John DeFazio, Jimmy Goldsmith, Matt Favero and Carlo Alfano.

In a 13-2 victory over the Greater Loudoun Babe Ruth (GLBR), the Terps gathered 10 hits, including three by Cerretani, two apiece by DeFazio and Ryan, and more by Alfano, Sam Kase, and David McGuire. DeFazio got the win with McGuire and Goldsmith in relief.

In a tight battle (2-0) with the Ashburn Mustangs, Grammes threw six innings of shut-out ball with Carlo Alfano in relief.  Jimmy Goldsmith and Favero scored on Cerretani’s RBI single.

Cerretani went the distance in the semi-final victory (11-1) against GLBR, surrendering only one unearned run and a pair of hits. Favero, Nielsen, Goldsmith, Owen Socher and McGuire contributed RBI, and Socher made four put outs in left field.

Back at Fireman’s field for the final game, DeFazio got the win (19-3) over the Virginia Lightning with Alfano in relief. Live bats produced 21 hits in the championship game, which featured stalwart defensive play by Kyle Hayes.

Coach Jim Goldsmith and the Terps said they applauded the competitors and organizers for participating in and hosting a great event.
