The defending Liberty District Champion Madison High School girls lacrosse team (4-1) entered district play Friday night with a resounding 24-10 victory over cross-town rival Marshall High School (4-3-2).
Madison came out strong, with Katie Kerrigan, Kierra Sweeney (2), Melissa Kellan and Erin Callahan scoring five unanswered goals in the first few minutes of the game.
After an early time out, the Statesmen, led by Coach Nicholle Depaz Clinton, regrouped and roared back to take a 9-8 halftime lead.
A pep talk from Head Coach Amanda Counts at the break instilled a sense of urgency in the Warhawks, as they dominated draw control and scored 16 goals in the second half.
The Warhawks were lead by senior Melissa Kellan with 7 goals and 2 assists, including a barrage of 4 consecutive second half goals to put the game out of Marshall’s reach.
Also scoring for Madison were Kierra Sweeney (4g, 2a), Alex Condon (4g), Katie Kerrigan (3g, 2a), Erin Callahan (2g, 1a), Madison Renshaw (2g, 1a) and Carly Frederick (1g, 1a). Goalie Sigourney Heerink notched 9 saves for the Warhawks.
Allie Johnson led Marshall with four goals, followed by Kelly Brown (3g, 1a). Mary Hagopian, Carly O'Berine and Emily Reinhart scored a goal a piece.
