Virginia Lacrosse: Madison Boys, Girls Advance to Northern Region Semifinals

Thursday night wins help keep the Warhawks alive in the playoffs.

In an unprecedented night for Madison Lacrosse, both the boys and girls lacrosse teams won in the quarterfinals Thursday night to advance to the Northern Region semifinals next week.

The girls lacrosse team (15-1) defeated Centreville (11-4) in a lopsided 20-8 win.

The Warhawks were lead by senior Erin Callahan and sophomore Kierra Sweeney, who had  5 goals and 2 assists a piece.

Also contributing to the Warhawk attack:

  • Katie Kerrigan (4 goals, 1 assist)
  • Melissa Kellan (2 goals, 3 assists)
  • Alex Condon (2 goals)
  • Carly Frederick (1 goal, 2 assists)
  • Sam Babbitt (1 goal, 1 assist).

A key to Madison's win was aggressive play from defenders Rachel Brennan, Maddie Roberts and Christina Rusinski, who forced multiple turnovers.  Winning goaltender Sigourney Heerink notched 6 saves.  

The Madison boys (14-5) narrowly edged Woodson (11-5) by a score of 6-5.

The victories set up a double header for the Warhawks at Madison next Wednesday.

The girls team will host Oakton (10-5) at 5 p.m. and the boys will square off against Robinson (13-4) at 7 p.m.

The winners of those games will advance to the Northern Regional Championship game and will also clinch a berth in the State Championship Tournament.
