Virginia Lacrosse: Madison Girls, Boys Advance to Northern Region Finals

Girls team defeats defending state champs Oakton to fight for a regional championship Friday.

In Northern Virginia Regional Tournament semi-final games, the Madison faithful were able to celebrate another doubleheader playoff win at home Wednesday night.

    In a very physical contest, the Madison girls team(16-1) defeated the defending state champion Oakton Cougars (10-6) by the score of 16-12.

    The game began as a tough defensive battle, with Oakton taking an early lead. The Warhawks mounted their comeback just before halftime and took an 8 – 6 advantage into the break.  The momentum continued in Madison’s favor at the beginning of the second frame as they built a four goal lead which they refused to relinquish.  Madison midfielder Alex Condon was the hot shooter for Madison with 5 goals and 1 assist. Six additional Warhawks contributed to the team offensive effort including Carly Frederick (3 goals, 1 assist), Melissa Kellan (3 goals), Katie Kerrigan (2 goals, 2 assists), Kierra Sweeney (2 goals, 1 assist), Erin Callahan (1 goal, 1 assist) and Sam Babbitt (1 assist). Sigourney Heerink was solid protecting the net, with 12 saves.

    In the second game, the Madison boys (15-5) defeated Robinson (13-5) in a thriller, by the score of 10-9.

    The Northern Region Championship games will be played Friday. The girls team will host Langley at 7 p.m. on Madison’s turf at 7:00pm.

    Langley (13-4) advanced to the championship game after defeating Westfield (17-2) in overtime in the other semi-final  regional game. The contest will feature a rematch of this year’s Liberty District Championship game which Madison won, 17-9.

    The Madison boys will face Chantilly, away, also at 7 p.m. 

    Both Madison teams have clinched a berth in the State Championship Tournament which begins next week.
