Virginia Lacrosse: Madison Girls, Boys Move On to State Championship

Girls team looks to recapture a title they won in 2011.

Madison High School's boys and girls lacrosse teams have both earned a spot in the Virginia State Lacrosse Championship game.

For the girls team, it's a chance to defend a title they won in 2011; a chance to bring home a second title in three years.

The girls team advanced to the championship with a 26-10 semifinal win over Osbourn Park (16-3) on Tuesday.

Madison’s potent offense, which is averaging over 20 goals per game, overpowered Osbourn Park behind a scoring blitz paced by Katie Kerrigan and Kierra Sweeney, as each racked up a season high 7 goals and 2 assists.

  • Sam Babbitt (2 goals, 4 assists)
  • Erin Callahan (2 goals, 2 assists)

  • Carly Frederick (1 goal, 3 assists)
  • Lia Cooley (1 goal).

Sigourney Heerink was the winning goalie for the 19th time this season, with defenders Rachel Brennan, Maddie Roberts and Christina Rusinski also playing tough. 

The Warhawks (19-1) will ride the experience of seven returning players from Madison’s 2011 state championship team (seniors Erin Callahan, Carly Frederick and Melissa Kellan, along with juniors Sam Babbitt, Alex Condon, Katie Kerrigan and Maddie Renshaw), the team’s focus all year has been on reclaiming the state title.   

And they'll face a familiar foe: the Langley Saxons.

The Langley girls (15-5) defeated Loudoun Valley (17-4) by the score of 12 –4 in the second semifinal game Tuesday night, setting up a championship final between Liberty District rivals Madison and Langley. 

Madison defeated Langley earlier this year in regular season play, as well as in the Liberty District and Northern Region Championship games.  The Warhawks and Saxons have proven to be the top two teams in the state, with each team expected to feature a high-powered offense and physical defense. 

The girls championship game will be played Saturday at 6 p.. at Westifeld High School.

Madison boys beat Dominion High School 9-4 in their semi final game Wednesday. The boys face Chantilly at 8 p.m. Saturday for the title.
