Virginia Lacrosse: Madison Girls, Boys Win Northern Region Title

Warhawks sweep the Friday championship.

In an unprecedented night for the Madison lacrosse program, both the girls and boys lacrosse teams won their respective Northern Region Championshipgames.

As a result, both teams roll into the State Championship Tournament next week as No. 1 seeds.

The girls team — which won the state championship in 2011 — continued its tear through Virginia competition with a 19-10 win over Langley. Warhawks junior Katie Kerrigan lead all scorers with 6 goals and 6 assists.  Senior Melissa Kellan also had a big night with 4 goals, as did Senior Erin Callahan and sophomore Kierra Sweeney with 3 goals and 2 assists a piece.

Others involved in the offensive blitz included Carly Frederick (1 goal, 3 assists), Sam Babbitt (1 goal), and Alex Condon (1 goal).  Condon was also key at center during draw control and on defense. Defenseman Rachel Brennan was also instrumental, causing multiple Langley turnovers.  Winning goalie Sigourney Heerink had 6 saves.

The Warhawks boys also won their Championship game  in a triple overtime thriller over Chantilly, 7-6.  Senior All-American Matt Hayden proved to be the difference, making 17 saves. Senior Ian Cooke, who missed half the season following knee surgery, scored the winning goal.
