Warhawks Take First Round of Bulldog Bash

Girls basketball team hands opponents first loss of the season in 53-48 victory.

The Madison Warhawks handed the Centreville Wildcats its first loss of the season in the opening round of the Bulldog Bash Basketball Tournament.

The previously undefeated Wildcats entered the tournament 9-0 and averaging more than 70 points per game.  But the battle-tested Warhawks were undaunted.  Madison held the explosive Wildcats to a season low 48 points, 22 points under its season average, in the tightly contested victory, 53-48.

The Warhawks flexed its defensive muscle in the first period, outscoring the Wildcats to 15-7.  Centreville almost doubled its offensive output in the second period with 12 points, but Madison matched the Wildcats and the first half ended with the Warhawks holding an 8-point lead, 27-19.

Both teams found their shooting range in the third period, with Centreville outscoring Madison 16-15 in the period.  The Wildcats continued to chip away at the lead and tied the Warhawks mid-way through the final period.  Sophomore guard Mamie Henshaw hit a clutch 3-pointer to reclaim the lead and Madison held on for its sixth victory of the season.

Senior point guard Megan LeDuc led the Warhawks with 17 points, while flawlessly orchestrating the offense and hitting clutch free throws down the stretch.  Sharp-shooting sophomore guard Jana Tremba scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers.  Aiden McWeeney and Katie Kerrigan chipped-in 9 and 8 points, respectively, while sophomore guard Mamie Henshaw scored 3 points and senior guard Jonee Finney scored 2 points.

The competition gets even more difficult in the second round of the Bull Dog Bash Basketball Tournament.  Defending Tournament Champion Madison faces undefeated (10-0) Paul VI Catholic -- the Washington Post’s third-ranked team -- on Friday.

 The Madison Warhawks play in the next round at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Westfield High School.
