The Recipe For A Super Party Includes Gumbo and Muffulettas

Can't make it to New Orleans? Read our restaurant recommendation for a New Orleans inspired Super Bowl party.

Are you ready for some football?  Even if you are not into football you can be into the party.  Food is an essential part of the planning.  I'm going with a theme this year, a New Orleans inspired menu.  My husband's family is from New Orleans and I grew up in Southeast Texas where gumbo coexists nicely with enchiladas and fresh shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico. With the big game in the Big Easy, who can resist?

Where do you go if you want to experience the flavor of New Orleans at your Super Bowl party but you can't make it down to the game? Have you been to Jason's Deli in Tyson's Corner or Fair Lakes?  You may be thinking "Deli"- for gumbo. Jason's opened its first restaurant in my hometown of Beaumont, Texas in 1976.  Growing up I loved the salad bar with their signature vinaigrette and the huge baked potatoes which were actually two large potatoes shoved together and topped with loads of traditional or non traditional toppings. Thank goodness for the metabolism we have in our youth.

Included on the Jason's menu are two authentic New Orleans specialties that will fit nicely into your Super Bowl menu.  First, I recommend the seafood gumbo. Jason's does a great job with a tasteful roux and delicate shrimp.  My second favorite is the Jason's muffuletta.  A muffuletta is a delicious New Orleans sandwich known for a tangy olive spread and blend of deli meats which melt together on a toasted Italian bread.   In New Orleans, the locals know the best place to get a Muffuletta is Central Grocery, a small grocery store on the edge of the French Quarter. In Northern Virginia, try Jason's Deli and don't forget the side of gumbo.
