Oktoberfest, Warmer Weather, Voter Registration and More

Here's a look at your week ahead, Vienna: 

Clear your schedule for this coming Saturday—it’s Oktoberfest in Vienna! Beyond the beer, there’s food, wine, activities for kids, music and a lot of new features this year. Watch Vienna Patch Tuesday through Saturday for information so you can make the most of it. The event is 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 along historic Church Street.

Tuesday is a good opportunity to check on your voter registration. You have to be registered to vote in the Nov. 5 general election by Oct. 15.

There are several voter registration events around the region this Tuesday, Oct. 1. The closest one to Vienna is in Merrifield. See: 'Voter Registration Event Tuesday' for more information about registration events, who’s on the ballot in Virginia this November and more.

We’ll know for sure whether the federal government is shutting down at 11:59 p.m. Monday. Here’s information about what will stay open, what closes and more if Congress is unable to come to an agreement to fund the federal government.

Thinking of applying your eighth-grader to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology as a freshman for the 2014-15 school year? There is an open house from 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday, Oct. 5 to learn about the school and its admissions process. The deadline for applications for next year is Oct. 18. Due to construction at TJHSST, the open house will take place at Holmes Middle School, 6525 Montrose St. in Alexandria. For more information, visit www.TJAdmissions.org.

Get ready for warmer temperatures this week. We’ll have partly sunny to sunny skies all week and temperatures will feel more like early September than early October. Monday’s high will be in the upper 70s. Tuesday through Friday high temperatures will be in the low to middle 80s.
