Runathon at Marshall Road, Gift Donations for Santa's Ride, Food Drive at Madison High

Here's a look at some local and regional happenings coming up this week:

  • On Tuesday, the Air Force Strolling Strings will perform at Vienna ES in the gym for all of the students. Providing a multi-dimensional experience, these outstanding musicians surround the audience with music performed exclusively from memory and without the aid of a conductor. Their repertoire includes classical, popular, continental, Broadway, bluegrass and patriotic compositions.
  • The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meets starting at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Fairfax County Government Center on 12000 Government Center Parkway. View the agenda online.
  • Vienna's Marshall Road Elementary PTA will hold its third annual Roadrunner Runathon Friday, a fundraiser to raise more than $20,000 to go toward STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) materials, as well as PTA programs. 
  • The Vienna Police Department is participating in “Santa’s Ride for Children” to benefit children who are hospitalized or in need during the holidays. The ride is sponsored by the Fairfax County Police Department’s Motor Squad and also includes the County Sheriff’s Department and the Virginia State Police. Citizens can bring donations of new unwrapped toys, games, books, stuffed animals and other gifts to the Vienna Police Department, 215 Center Street S, by Monday, Dec. 9. Cash donations are also welcome.
  • Donate to the Madison High School food drive for Food for Others in Merrifield. This week, the school is collecting canned tuna. Donations can be dropped off at the main office or during third period. For more information see the flyer.
  • Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe is expected to make an announcement Monday afternoon of several key appointments in his administration. Patch will keep an eye out to see if any local officials will be on board.
  • Fredericksburg will host a 150th anniversary commemoration Tuesday of the Gettysburg Address. At 5 p.m., the National Park Service will host an informal gathering in the Fredericksburg National Cemetery on the 150th Anniversary of Lincoln’s address.
  • Also on Tuesday, students from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County, will see a satellite they built get launched into space by NASA. The launch is scheduled from the Wallops Island facility on the VA Eastern Shore.
  • Wednesday, President Obama returns to Northern Virginia. This time he, first lady Michelle Obama, former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will visit President John F. Kennedy's gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery. Friday will be the 50th anniversary of JFK's death.
